The Public Guardian and Trustee (PGT) provides a range of financial and personal care management services for adults under a number of different roles including Committee of Estate, Committee of Person, Power of Attorney, Representative, Litigation Guardian and Pension Trustee. For the majority of our adult clients, the PGT is Committee of Estate under the Patients Property Act, with responsibility for the legal and financial management of our client's affairs. For our remaining clients, the PGT fills other roles either separately or in addition to being Committee of Estate. When appointed Committee of Estate, PGT staff work with the client to establish an effective management plan that includes managing property and investments, paying bills, securing assets and pursuing compensation where appropriate. As Committee of Person, the PGT is a substitute decision-maker for health and personal care needs of an individual. Involving Clients Although a person may not be capable of managing his or her own financial and legal affairs or making personal decisions, he or she may still be capable of making some decisions. The PGT's goal is to provide the level of help the person needs and to make decisions, where necessary, that the person would have made had she or he been capable. Each person's situation is unique. Client Service Teams At the PGT's office, each client's financial and legal affairs are managed by a Client Service Team which includes a Case Manager and staff with financial expertise. Our Client Service Teams are divided into four regions: Greater Vancouver, Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and Interior-North. Questions about a client's affairs should be directed to the specific Case Manager. If you do not know the Case Manager's name, please give the client's name to the receptionist at the office in the region where the client resides, and you will be connected to the client's Case Manager. Family and Caregiver Involvement A client's relatives and caregivers are encouraged to talk to the Case Manager and to discuss the client's preferences and concerns so that our office can provide the best possible service to our client. Any information that can give our office a better understanding of our clients' circumstances, or family situations, will make it possible for us to provide better service to our clients. If you have concerns about how we manage a client's affairs, please discuss it with the Case Manager. If this does not solve the problem, ask to speak to the Regional Manager. See our Contact Us page for regional contact information to access Client Service Teams and for instructions on how to call toll-free. See our publication When the PGT is Committee for more information on how the PGT is appointed, duties and responsibilities including how assets are managed and decisions are made. See our News and Information page for additional information on legislation and fees, client investments and special projects and our Reports and Publications page for PGT newsletters, brochures, fact sheets and public reports.
